It was just a couple of days ago when the Daytime Emmy nominations were announced, but there is already a bit of sad news. One of this year's nominees has rescinded their nomination.
Days of our Lives newcomer Victoria Grace (Wendy Shin) has announced that she has rescinded her nomination in this year's Outstanding Younger Performer category. It isn't that the actress doesn't feel she is deserving, but a recent rule change has left her ineligible to compete.
"I was honored to be nominated for a Daytime Emmy and to be recognized by the Academy," Grace wrote in a statement published to her social media accounts. "Unfortunately, there was a huge misunderstanding across the board regarding the rules for this year's category. This is obviously a surprise and I am heartbroken, but in fairness to all, I'll be rescinding my nomination. I wish the best of luck to all the nominees. I will continue to work hard to earn another Daytime Emmy nomination next year!"
The Younger Performer category is one of the most changed categories at the Daytime Emmys. In 2020, due to a declining number of eligible entries, the Outstanding Younger Actor and Outstanding Younger Actress categories were merged into the gender-neutral category. At the same time, and perhaps unnoticed, was a secondary announcement that the age limit in the category would gradually be rolled back. The age cap used to be 25, but it was lowered to 21 for last year's competition. This year, the threshold dropped to 18, where it will remain moving forward.
According to the official rules from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, a nominee can be "no older than 18 years old on at least January 1, 2022."
The three remaining nominees will remain on the ballot for the June 16 ceremony. Those nominees are Cary Christopher (Thomas DiMera, Days of our Lives), Eden McCoy (Josslyn Jacks, General Hospital), and Henry Joseph Samiri (Douglas Forrester, The Bold and the Beautiful).
