CBS reigns supreme in daytime with its number-one rated soap opera The Young and the Restless and its globally successful soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, and it is once again bringing more soap power to its lineup: the network has just signed a two-year deal with the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) to air the Daytime Emmy Awards!
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 48th annual Daytime Emmy Awards will air in primetime on CBS on Friday, June 25, and will stream live on Paramount+ at the same time. Deadline reports that CBS and NATAS will release additional information about the upcoming ceremony in the coming months.
CBS has televised the Daytime Emmys fourteen times -- more than any other network -- including last year's 2020 Daytime Emmy Awards, which was broadcast virtually after the in-person ceremony was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The then-co-hosts of The Talk -- Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood, Eve, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Marie Osmond -- hosted last year's ceremony, which drew three million viewers to CBS. Before the awards show's return to CBS in 2020, the ceremony had been streaming on online platforms since 2015, when it aired on Pop TV.
As Soap Central previously reported, NATAS decided to scrap its Daytime Emmy pre-nominations this year and has implemented many other changes, including a descending age scale for Younger Actor entrants and many Creative Arts categories being merged. To read more about those changes, click here.
The 48th annual Daytime Emmy Awards show is being produced by NATAS and Associated Television International, which produced the ceremony from 2009-11 and again last year. Adam Sharp and Steve Ulrich are executive producers for NATAS, while David McKenzie is executive producer and director for ATI.
CBS had already signed on to televise this year's Primetime Emmy Awards, and its decision to air the Daytime Emmys, as well, marks the first time since 2008 that one network will broadcast both trophy shows in the same year. The last time CBS aired both shows was back in 2005.
