General Hospital fans might not be too happy to hear that Jane Elliot (Tracy Quartermaine) is leaving the ABC soap opera when her contract expires this spring.
Daytime Confidential reports the actress made the decision to walk away from the role she has played on-again, off-again since 1978. However, this isn't the first time the subject of retiring the character has come up. Elliot told TV Insider last year that she's been "anxiously awaiting" the day when she could leave the series.
"It will be very hard to leave GH. There are people in that building who have been a part of my life for 38 years and I will miss them dearly," she said. "But I want to keep growing, learning new things, living in new places, in order to expand my mind. Thank God for soap operas, I have raised two kids who are now grown and on their own. This has been the best job possible for any actor who is a mom."
In addition to playing Tracy since 1978, Elliot played Guiding Light's Carrie Todd, All My Children's Cynthia Chandler, and Days of our Lives' Anjelica Deveraux. She also briefly took GH's Tracy to the short-lived Loving spinoff The City.
UPDATE: April 11, 2017
More than a month after news of Elliot's exit was first reported by Soap Central, ABC has confirmed the actress' exit. In a two-part tweet on the General Hospital handle, the show encouraged viewers to "witness the beginning of Jane Elliot's final [story] arc, a month-long story that will culminate on" May 4th.
