Daytime drama fans may have missed out on their daily dose of soap operas when some of the long-running series were preempted in certain markets due to the broadcast of the House's impeachment hearings concerning President Donald Trump last week. But Saturday Night Live insists that while the coverage prevented traditional soap operas from airing in their normally scheduled time slots, television audiences were treated to a soap opera, nonetheless.
The cold open for the November 16 episode of the popular late-night series parodies Days of our Lives by portraying former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch's testimony as an episode of the NBC soap opera. The spoof -- titled Days of our Impeachment -- came just days after NBC News was mocked on social media for an analysis article which claimed the first witnesses testifying in the inquiry "lacked the pizzazz necessary to capture public attention."
The SNL segment begins with a voiceover explaining that some had complained that the hearings had been "dull" and "not The Masked Singer," so -- as heard in the video of the segment below -- "to make sure people are paying attention, we now present the hearings in a way that underscores how scandalous these revelations really are. This is Days of Our Impeachment -- where the only thing at stake is democracy."
The cold open, which features classic soap opera tropes like fainting and amnesia, stars Jon Hamm as Ambassador Bill Taylor; Alex Moffat as Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff; Mikey Day as Republican Rep. Jim Jordan; Cecily Strong as Marie Yovanovitch, the former ambassador to Ukraine; Melissa Villaseņor as "telenovela sensation" Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; and Kate McKinnon, reprising her role as Rudy Giuliani.

While the impeachment hearings may have prevented DAYS from airing in some markets last week, they didn't prevent drama from unfolding behind-the-scenes at the NBC soap opera. The daytime community was rocked to find out that DAYS released all of its actors from their contracts and will be going on an indefinite hiatus at the end of November.
