Get ready for some super stellar talent, because daytime alums Tika Sumpter (ex-Layla Williamson, One Life to Live) and Michael B. Jordan (ex-Reggie Montgomery, All My Children) are teaming up for an HBO Max project.
The actors, who both shot to success and are now major Hollywood stars, are both attached to the psychological thriller The Ancestor, but in different ways. Deadline reports that Sumpter will both star in the film and co-produce it, while Jordan will produce alongside his production partners, Alana Mayo and Khaliah Neal of the Outlier Society. Emily Gerson Saines will be executive producer.
The script was written by This Is Us writer Kay Oyegun, who developed the story based on an idea she hatched with Sumpter. HBO Max won the spec auction for the project, reportedly paying in the high six figures.
Not much else is known about The Ancestor at this time, but Sumpter's role is described as "a female med student who finds herself in a timely psychological thriller premise in the tradition of Get Out."
Sumpter played One Life to Live's Layla from 2006 to 2011 before going on to star in TV series like Gossip Girl, The Game, The Haves and Have Nots, and Mixed-ish. She also costarred in the Ride Along films, played the future First Lady Michelle Obama in Southside With You, and recently starred in Sonic the Hedgehog.
Jordan starred as AMC's Reggie from 2003 to 2006 before going on superstardom in films like Fruitvale Station, Fantastic Four, Creed, and Black Panther. Some of his other upcoming projects include Wrong Answer, a film based on the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal; a second remake of The Thomas Crown Affair; a Denzel Washington-directed film called Journal for Jordan, which follows a real-life soldier who kept a journal full of poignant life lessons for his newborn son while deployed overseas; and an undisclosed role in an upcoming David O. Russell drama starring Christian Bale and Margot Robbie.
