2006 saw AMC having a rough year which the ratings have reflected. That being the case it makes it hard to write this column, however I've found a few positives as well the negatives to discuss.
January 8, 2007
Some of you asked 'If Bianca can forgive Babe a little, can't you?' That is a very valid question, but I can answer it with one word: no.
January 15, 2007
No, that is not Z's like in snoozing, being bored with what you are doing or watching. Although, we might have had a few moments like that in 2006 with our beloved AMC. Actually it is Zach/Zarf/Zoe, how are these TWO connected?
January 22, 2007
Zoe came out to all of Pine Valley this week, but not before admitting to the Fusion murders in a last ditch attempt to hide the fact that the vial in her hotel room contained estrogen, not the poison given to Simone, Erin and Dani. In true soap fashion, the reveal was made in front of a room full of stunned PV residents, who proceeded to spit (in Ryan's case, literally) questions at her.
January 29, 2007
Dixie is history and we will no longer have the wonderfully talented Cady McClain to grace us during our viewing. Considering TPTB [The Powers That Be, a term for the show executives] wooed Cady into returning to AMC with the promise of a grand story - a great reintroduction of Dixie back into PV -- to only fire her after a little more than a year, is just beyond cruel.
February 5, 2007
In previous columns, I've openly admitted I'm a bit of a crier. Anything remotely emotional - happy, sad, take your pick - and I tend to shed a few tears. So when they decided to drop a serial killer in the middle of Pine Valley last year, I knew I would be going through more than my normal share of tissues. And even though I had grown to hate Dixie over the course of the past year, I knew that her death would hit me the hardest of any so far. I knew I was in trouble when I actually started tearing up during last Friday's previews.
February 12, 2007
Dixie dying because of poison laden peanut butter & banana pancakes was bad enough but for Tad and Dixie to not have their together forever is just too sad. I cried throughout the flashbacks although they certainly brought a smile to see the past weddings. To hear the 'till death do us part' really turned on the waterworks! That along with Opal telling Dixie to say 'hello' to her dear Jenny.
February 19, 2007
Remember last column, when I talked about my tendency to cry at anything even slightly emotional? Well, it turns out that rule doesn't apply when it comes to the death of Babe Carey Chandler. I watched Babe get attacked, I watched her in the hospital, I watched her love ones gather and keep vigil while she was in surgery. But apart from welling up a little when Krystal said goodbye to her daughter's dead body, I didn't need a single tissue. That's how much I hate this character!
February 26, 2007
My last couple of columns, which you can find in this site's archives, have expressed the outrage and disappointment related to Dixie's demise and Cady McClain's firing. However, I've continued to receive an enormous amount of mail on this issue and would like to discuss it a little more.
March 5, 2007
Let me tell you, I have been in a great mood this week. It's one of those rare times when the stars seem to be aligning and the soap gods have answered my prayers. We'll get to what's exciting me in Pine Valley soon, but first I want to address a major story that broke this week - the long-awaited firing of the now former AMC head writer, Megan McTavish. Wow, that's nice to see in print: former AMC head writer Megan McTavish. It sends chills up and down my spine!
March 12, 2007
Megan McTavish is gone (again) but Brian Frons and Julie Carruthers remain. I have great hope the writing will vastly improve but also have my doubts because the powers behind McTavish are still around. I've received so much mail about this firing from so many folks hoping upon hope that AMC can recover from the past year or so. Where does AMC go from here?
March 19, 2007
For most of the past week in the Valley, the focus was the perpetually screwed up Carey/Chandler clan. We started out with Erica blabbing to Tad and JR that Babe was indeed alive.
March 26, 2007
Oh, I so love David Canary! He is top notch and I loved him even more this week when he brought back the Adam of old. Adam isn't taking any of this "I'm so sorry I slept with Tad" talk from Krystal. And why should he? After all Krystal has continually confessed her love for Adam even when she had her one-night stand with Tad, so Adam has every reason in the world to be LIVID!
April 2, 2007
Soap operas are supposed to be all about "love in the afternoon" so it's very appropriate for me start off this week's column with a little bit of lovey-dovey romantic stuff.
April 09, 2007
Adam wants payback for having Chandler Enterprises striped away from him and for Tad impregnating Krystal. I can't blame him after all he is only human and he is Adam Chandler.
April 16, 2007
Kristine is unable to provide a new column this week.
April 23, 2007
Oh, Adam is just so evil right now and even though I can't imagine him stealing Jenny, only to put her out on the black market and certainly don't excuse his actions, I am so enjoying seeing David Canary at his best. Remember everyone this is just a soap and the actors are 'acting.'
April 30, 2007
Yet another new baby is kidnapped in Pine Valley. Shootings, kidnappings, rapes......crimes are running high in this quiet little town somewhere in PA.
May 7, 2007
Janet Dillon is definitely from another planet. She feels a parent should have a license before having children. This is all good in theory, but we are talking about a woman who just kidnapped a baby and bopped her own daughter over the head to enlist her help to watch Jenny/Maura.
May 14, 2007
Yep, I'm back! Suellen pinch hit for me last time, as I was headed down to Chicago for - you guessed it - an AMC-related trip. Jetting to personal appearances is officially my new addiction.
May 21, 2007
I'm glad my wedding wasn't held in Pine Valley as there is always the potential ex-spouse showing up from the dead (Maria style) or trying to show up as Greenlee just did.
May 28, 2007
Even with her character dominating AMC of late, I'm trying really hard to stick to my pledge to give Sabine Singh, the new Greenlee, a real shot at owning the role
June 4, 2007
It appears Julia is pregnant and considering Sydney Penny is very pregnant I was wondering if and when this would be addressed. Now I'm pretty sure Julia has only been sleeping with Jamie so if Justin & Alexa choose to leave daytime for bigger and better opportunities, what will happen to this pregnancy?
June 11, 2007
Well folks, its official - AMC's done it again. They've brought back a popular character and made me despise her within a matter of weeks.
June 18, 2007
What's up with Ryan saying Greenlee can be a mother to Spike? I think he's lost his mind, wait a minute, let's help him find it! I can't understand any of this plot.
June 25, 2007
Hands down, the highlight of this week in Pine Valley was JR's faux kidnapping plot and how it all fell to pieces.
July 2, 2007
There was no joy at Chandler mansion this week once the reality of everything Adam owns now belongs to Zach Slater.
July 9, 2007
I am still loving the battle between the Chandlers and the Slaters. After being confronted by Tad and unable to bear Adam's guilt (yeah, right), JR came clean with his dad and admitted he staged the kidnapping. Junior, once again, was pretty pathetic, offering half-hearted apologies and trying to equate what he did with Adam's collusion with Zach.
July 16, 2007
Greenlee's fortune cookie couldn't be truer as she travels down that long, harrowing road herself. She is now facing the reality that her relentless pursuit to regain her prior life with Ryan is futile.
July 23, 2007
You know what's worse than watching a cheesy music montage of the Fusion Green photo shoot? Watching the girls of Fusion watch a cheesy music montage of the Fusion Green photo shoot.
July 30, 2007
Once Zach tells Kendall about Spike's dilemma she goes into premature labor. Why exactly after Zach told everyone else to keep Kendall in the dark on the situation did he blab?
August 6, 2007
Despite what Josh thinks of Greenlee now after what happened to his nephew, he did the gallant, professional thing and escorted Ms Smythe to her condo when she decided to check herself out of the hospital.
August 13, 2007
Now anyone that has read my columns knows I'm no Greenlee fan, but now everyone in PV hates her too! This is all due to the fact she changed her mind after deciding to kidnap Spike.
August 20, 2007
Frankly, I'm exhausted -- emotionally drained, frustrated, and exhausted. Watching this show feels more and more like a chore, especially with this Spike-is-deaf, Ian-is-near-death, Kendall-is-torn-between-her-children, storyline.
August 27, 2007
Kendall is front and center pretty much every single day and this has been the case for quite some time.
September 3, 2007
As stressful as the last few weeks have been, I hoped that I would get to see at least one day of Zach and Kendall, back in their new home, trying to support one another through their latest crises.
September 10, 2007
We all know how secrets have a way of coming out in Pine Valley. Annie blames herself for her mother's suicide.
September 17, 2007
I'd like to start this week with a formal request to the AMC writers. Could we please go a few days without a baby nearly dying?
September 24, 2007
Our Two Scoopers are on an end-of-summer vacation this week, so there will be no new column this week.
October 1, 2007
This week, I want to start with how last week ended. Now, I preface this by saying that, as a soap fan, I'm used to my intelligence being insulted from time to time. Perhaps that's even too harsh a term. Let's say I'm used to having events heavily foreshadowed, past events mentioned ad nauseum, and having things spelled out to me on an almost childish level
October 8, 2007
I'm talking about Revenge. Seems Kendall and Zach are all over the revenge plot against Greenlee. Anyone that has read my columns knows I'm no Greenlee fan but this is ridiculous.
October 15, 2007
Last week, we saw the first glimpse of nuBabe when Amanda Baker took over for the exiting Alexa Havins.
October 22, 2007
Kendall's plan is simple enough as she plans to make it look as if Greenlee is obsessed with Spike as Kendall makes fake entries in Greenlee's 'journal.'
October 29, 2007
More than two years ago, AMC scribes started a storyline that just won't end. Ryan Lavery, Pine Valley's favourite son, was determined not to procreate and got a vasectomy behind then-wife Greenlee's back, prompting her to covertly conceive their child. Ever since those fateful decisions were made, AMC has rarely veered away from what has become the core of its storytelling. In short, it's all about Ryan's sperm.
November 5, 2007
Goodness, while I expect to see torture and meanness on night time TV like Criminal Minds I'd prefer AMC give it a rest. Lately everyone is hitting someone, torturing someone or thinking of how to push someone else down and it appears to be continuing.
November 12, 2007
Ryan Lavery was able to disengage the automatic pilot devise and land a plane via radio communication and verbal instructions. Pretty amazing stuff and yet another heroic act by Ryan as he protects and saves his wife and others trapped on this plane ride from you-know-where. I know I shouldn't be thinking of Ryan as his portrayer, Cameron Mathison, but it was hard to do during those scenes.
November 19, 2007
While the search for our new Two Scooper continues, I thought it might be nice to take a walk down memory lane and check out some of Mary P's most memorable columns of the last three years.
November 26, 2007
A couple of weeks ago I made the trek south of the border to attend my second SSW. (Thanks to Suellen for covering for me!) As always, it was great to get together with old friends (and make some new ones). Nothing bonds you to another person like huddling for warmth while standing in line in the surprisingly chilly Florida morning.
December 3, 2007
That's exactly what Greenlee tried to do with that ridiculous trapeze gear. How exactly did Greenlee have time to leave the party, get the outfit, etc. and hook everything up?
December 10, 2007
For me, soap operas are all about establishing relationships. I have to be emotionally involved with a character.
December 17, 2007
Before I started watching soaps, I was blissfully naïve in believing that couples had children out of love, out of a commitment between two people to bring another life into the world to nurture, to protect, to guide. Together, the happy family would share happiness, overcome adversity, conquer sorrow, and show the world the true meaning of 'family.'
December 24, 2007
If you watched All My Children this week, you got the same impression. We had the yuletide staples: Father Clarence dispensing his spooky brand of advice, Stuart dressing up like Santa and, Adam passing out egg nog in his living room. It should have been a happy week, a respite from the never-ending drama in Pine Valley.
December 31, 2007
Yes, I know. The title of this column may have caused a few double-takes, a couple of eye rolls, and one or two out-and-out belly laughs.
