It was an ABC kind of night at the 2000 Soap Opera Digest Awards. The entire ABC daytime line-up --- Port Charles, All My Children, One Life to Live, and General Hospital --- was graced with SOD crystal.
In total, All My Children won four awards on the night. Almost every AMC performer nominated for an award walked home with a trophy. There were only two AMC losses on the night. The first came as GH's Anthony Geary (Luke Spencer) topped David Canary (Adam and Stuart Chandler) for Outstanding Lead Actor. The second came in the final award of the ceremony: Outstanding Show. That award went to General Hospital.
The night started off well as Mark Consuelos (Mateo Santos) earned his third win in three nominations as Outstanding Younger Actor. Off (and soon to be on) screen wife, Kelly Ripa (Hayley Vaughan) won in the women's version of the category, Outstanding Younger Actress. In accepting her award, Ripa mused that she was glad the voters though her "good enough and young enough to be in this category." When the audience laughed, the actress puckered her lips and scolded them for laughing a bit too long.
Newcomer Abigail Spencer (Becca Tyree) was named the year's top newcomer on soaps.
Finola Hughes (Alexandra Devane), hardly a newcomer to the world of soaps, picked up an award for Best Return. It was her first nomination for her work on AMC, but the actress previously won two awards and garnered seven nominations as Anna Devane on General Hospital.
