Diane told Nikki that they needed to talk; she assured Nikki that Nikki would be interested in what Diane had to say. She looked around and complimented Nikki on her home, but Nikki only wanted her to say what she wanted to say and get out. Diane guaranteed that she would enjoy Nikki's reaction to what she had to say. Nikki guessed that Diane was playing games. Diane said that she was there on serious business. Diane commented on how well Nikki was looking, and Diane said that one's health was what was important. Nikki agreed that if one didn't have one's health, it didn't matter how much money one had.
Diane wondered what it was like being snatched back from the jaws of death. She wanted Nikki to describe it to her, but Nikki didn't know how to explain it. "Why don't you write a book?" Diane suggested. "Back from the Dead, by Nikki...Nikki what? You can't use the Newman name -- that name is already taken. It seems that while you have been lolling around, thinking you are married to the great Lord Newman, you really aren't married, after all! I am still Mrs. Victor Newman."
Nikki looked at Diane as if she were talking to a crazy woman. Nikki said, "Diane, you can't really think you are still married to Victor!" Diane said that not only did she think it, she knew it. "I assure you that Victor and I are still husband and wife. If you don't believe me, ask you husband...oh, I forgot -- ask my husband."
"Victor and I had a wedding ceremony with witnesses," Nikki explained to Diane. She said that Diane was deluded if she thought that she was still Victor's wife. Diane told her, "No, you have to accept it. Victor and I are still married. If you don't believe me, ask him. When Victor comes home tonight and before you fetch his slippers, ask him." Nikki told Diane. "We see a different truth. But if it gets you out of my house, I promise to ask Victor. Diane laughed and said, "Good! That is all I came to say, so I will leave. Have a pleasant day Mrs. ...Nikki." Diane left Nikki with a puzzled but disgusted look on her face.
Victor had a meeting with John and told him that he should be thankful he wasn't defending him for murder. Victor wondered "what the hell" Diane was after. He said he had offered her a large settlement, and he wondered what else she could want. John said Victor had heard her loud and clear -- she was not interested in money; she wanted to be Victor's wife. Victor said that he had gone over there and tried to talk some sense in Diane; however, he had failed, and any chance of an amicable settlement was out the window.
John was upset that Victor had gone to see Diane without him. Victor explained that he'd thought he'd be able to get through to her without that lawyer hanging around. He just wanted it over. "If Michael Baldwin proves that the divorce is not valid, we can still can file in the U.S.," John told Victor. Victor wanted to know how long that would take. When John began to hem and haw, Victor demanded to know how long it would take.
John admitted the divorce could take a long time. Diane could hold them up in court for years. And if they did go to court, Diane could win an astronomical award. "Award, Victor," John explained. "Awards are not negotiable. Diane will be entitled to a portion of your entire estate for as long as she is your wife. For every month she remains your wife, it will be worth millions to her. Now, if you were a scorned, vindictive wife armed with that information, what would you do?"
"This is outrageous," Victor said, but John assured him that it was the way it worked. It would be much better if they could reach an agreeable settlement.
Ryan said that he had to go see Tricia, even if it upset Phillip. He'd never meant for it to be a permanent solution. "I know that, and you know that, but Phillip doesn't," Nina reminded him. Nina had been thinking and thought maybe Ryan was right about professional help. Maybe it was time to reconsider that option. Nina said that Phillip's problem was that he loved his dad too much. Phillip said it wasn't about love; he wanted a family that didn't exist any longer. Since she was considering getting professional help, maybe Phillip would handle it better when he moved back in with Tricia. As he headed out the door, Nina promised to do her best to hold down the fort.
A happy and excited Phillip walked in with his book report; it was the last of his make-up work. When he didn't see Ryan, he asked where Ryan was; he wanted his dad to check it out, too. Nina had to tell Phillip that Ryan had gone to see Tricia, but he had promised that he would be back soon. She wished Phillip could understand that it didn't mean that Ryan didn't love him. Dejected, Phillip slowly walked out of the room.
After Katherine told Jill that she was going out, Jill began to remember all that she'd had with Phillip. Jill wondered if that woman knew anything. She got the number from information and gave her a call.
Tony arrived just in time to help Cassie pick out the right swimsuit for the party she was attending. After Cassie went outside to wait for her ride, Tony and Sharon talked. Sharon said that she still had a lot of trouble with Grace around Nick. She told him about Grace's promotion; it bothered her because she had a feeling that Grace was up to something. With the promotion, Grace had a built-in excuse to spend as much time with Sharon's husband -- day and night -- as she wished. Tony said that Sharon had nothing to worry about. Nick was Grace's fantasy; Tony was her reality. He insisted nothing was going to happen there -- no way. Sharon decided that it was time for Tony to have a promotion: from fiancé to husband.
Grace and Nick talked about the new job. Nick said that the memo had just gone out; his dad was really proud of the work she did. Grace said that as much as she was happy about the new job, she had a feeling that it was more than Victor Newman liking her work that had gotten her the promotion. Nick said that when one worked hard, one got recognition. He told her to get used to it. Grace said that she would never be able to thank him enough. "You are the perfect boss," she declared.
As Grace continued to flirt with Nick, she began to ask a favor then hesitated. Nick insisted on knowing what she had wanted to say. She told him that she wanted to give him a thank you kiss, but she realized that it wouldn't be appropriate. "You know something? I think I just felt a kiss without the lips," Nick told her. "So did I," Grace replied with a smile.
Beatrice showed up at the Chancellor home and commented that it hadn't changed much since she'd left; the house brought back many memories. Jill wanted her to try to remember anything that she could about Jill's beloved Phillip. At first, Beatrice didn't remember anything, but suddenly, she remembered a time when she and another maid had been asked to witness Phillip's signing of a very important document. The papers had been very important, and he'd needed them signed and sealed immediately. Beatrice couldn't remember where the papers had been put; they had to be with all of his other papers. Jill's face lit up when Beatrice said that Jill had been the most important person in Phillip's life; she was sure that he had to have left something to Jill. "Try to find peace," she said as she left.
Jill searched through the attic for the papers. She was sure Phillip would have written down that he'd wanted her to have everything. She would find them even if it was the last thing she did. Esther interrupted Jill's search. She said that Mrs. Chancellor wouldn't be happy to see that. Jill threatened that if Esther mentioned it to Mrs. Chancellor, she would be sorry. Jill grabbed Esther's apron and shook her, saying, "Is that clear?" Frightened, Esther ran out of the attic.
Ryan arrived at the apartment and surprised Tricia, who hadn't been expecting him. They kissed and said how much they had missed each other. When she asked about Phillip, he told her that things were getting better for Phillip, but Tricia wasn't convinced. "This is a child with serious emotional problems," Tricia said. Ryan told her that Nina had agreed to get professional help for Phillip, but Tricia wondered if Phillip would even try, since his method was working so well.
"Until Phillip stops looking at me as the enemy, nothing has changed," Tricia said. Ryan asked if that meant she was giving up. Tricia wondered if it made any sense to put her life on hold while waiting for him to set things straight. She didn't think he would ever have a relationship with her as long as his boy was in his life. She was losing faith but not giving up. Ryan didn't have any answers except that they were going to get outside help; he would do it that day. He begged her to bear with him a little longer and asked, "Will you do that for us?"
Katherine returned home and noticed that Esther is acting strangely. She wanted to know why Esther was so nervous, but Esther didn't want to talk about it.
Ryan returned home and learned that Phillip had found out that he had been at Tricia's. Phillip was very upset and had been in his room ever since. "We are back at square one," Ryan said. He called for Phillip to go into the living room. "I hear you are upset with me for going to see Tricia," he began, stating, "I wish I could understand why this upsets you so much. Your mother and I are concerned about you."
Phillip explained that every time Ryan left the house, Phillip didn't know if Ryan would ever return. Ryan reminded Phillip that he had promised to return, but Phillip said that he didn't know if he could believe Ryan. Phillip said, "I want to trust you, but since the time that you walked out on Mom and me, I just can't." With shoulders slumped, he walked back to his room. Nina was in tears.
Victor was conducting business when Nikki arrived. He wondered what she was doing there. She told him that she had a question and asked, "Have things involving me been happening that I know nothing about?" Victor demanded, "What the hell are you talking about?" Nikki shared, "I had a visitor today. You won't believe what Diane said to me." It took a while for Victor to comprehend the words that Nikki had just spoken, but as he did, he got a disgusted look on his face.
At Diane's apartment, Michael arrived after she'd summoned him. Diane said she'd visited Nikki and had dropped a bomb by telling her a secret about Victor. Michael replied, "I wish you would've come to me first. As much as you got off telling her that you were still the real Mrs. Newman, I would've advised against it." Diane said she deserved to have a little fun.
Michael warned Diane that after Victor learned what Diane had done, he'd really be on the warpath. Michael sighed and said he'd have to scramble to ensure they had an airtight case. Diane cried, "Michael, this is my future we're talking about." Michael said he just needed to snoop around and get a few more details about Victor and Nikki's wedding. Diane recalled that Nikki hadn't been expected to survive long enough to recite her vows during the ceremony in her hospital room. Before Michael left, he told Diane he'd keep in touch.
Michael stopped by the church to question the priest who'd performed Nikki and Victor's wedding at the hospital. Michael said he recalled that at the time, Nikki's condition had been declared terminal, and her death had seemed imminent. The priest agreed that though Nikki's condition had been grave, the wedding had been very real. The priest checked his records and reported that he'd performed the ceremony on April 6, 1998. Michael asked the priest if he'd been aware that just before the ceremony, Victor had been granted a divorce. The priest replied that he had not and wondered aloud how Victor could have obtained a marriage license. Michael nodded, thanked the priest, and left.
Michael went to the county clerk's office to research the marriage license issued to Victor and Nikki. Michael told the clerk, Mr. Carson, that it appeared Victor Newman had somehow managed to evade the waiting period Wisconsin required between the granting of a divorce and the issuance of a marriage license. Mr. Carson checked his records and said, "Apparently, you don't have all your facts straight, counselor." Mr. Carson explained that a hearing had been held in Judge Jennings' court to waive the statute and issue an immediate marriage license. Mr. Carson added that he'd never violate a court order. Michael clarified that Judge Jennings had issued the injunction. Michael thanked the clerk and left.
Michael went to visit Judge Jennings at his office. Michael inquired about Victor Newman's case. Michael said he was aware that Judge Jennings had enforced an injunction that had allowed Victor Newman to remarry his ex-wife after waiving the mandatory waiting period after his divorce. Judge Jennings said there had been extenuating circumstances. Michael said he was aware that Nikki had been in the hospital, fighting for her life. The judge agreed that Nikki's condition had been quite grim, though he was aware that Nikki had pulled through.
Judge Jennings explained to Michael that he'd dealt with the situation as it had appeared at the time and was confident that the representations made had been honest and forthright. Michael asked if the circumstances that had occurred afterward might have affected the validity of the marriage. The judge said he assumed Michael had a specific reason to ask the question and thought it improper to issue an opinion on the matter. After Michael stepped out of the judge's office, he stomped his foot and said aloud to himself, "You wouldn't admit it, but you do question the validity of that marriage, don't you, judge?"
In Victor's office, Nikki, distraught, told Victor that her suspicions had been aroused after an unexpected visit from Diane. Nikki said, "I have this odd feeling that things concerning me have been happening that I know nothing about." Nikki implored Victor to tell her what was going on. Victor rose from his chair, walked from behind his desk, and said, "I can't believe that Diane Jenkins had the audacity to tell you that she's still my wife." Nikki said that if Diane wished to live in a make-believe world, then so be it.
Victor grew quiet and contemplative. Nikki asked Victor if he was concerned about Diane's ridiculous accusation. After Victor didn't reply, Nikki cried, "My God. It is true. She is your wife still." Victor replied, "No, but she thinks she is, and her lawyer thinks she is."
Tears welled in Nikki's eyes as she feared her marriage to Victor might be challenged. Victor assured Nikki that their ceremony in her hospital room had made her his wife. Nikki, sobbing, asked Victor how he could have kept the fact that Diane was still legally married to him a secret. Victor said he'd felt certain it was simply an irritating matter he could have handled before Nikki had heard about it. Nikki demanded Victor deal with it so she'd never have to see Diane's face again.
Victor assured Nikki he'd handle the matter by going after Diane's punk attorney. Victor added, "I detest that little bastard. I talked to Christine Williams about him. She knows something about him, and she wouldn't tell me what it is. I'm going to find out. I'll tell you one thing. I'm going to destroy that punk before he has time to do any damage to you, my children, or me." Victor embraced a sobbing Nikki to console her.
Victor arrived at Christine Williams' law office and thanked her for agreeing to see him on short notice. Victor explained that Diane, his ex-wife, had turned down an extremely generous offer because Michael Baldwin had convinced her he could get her a lot more. Victor added that Michael had also convinced Diane that she was still married to him due to a loophole in a contract. Victor insisted that Michael was only out for his own fame and fortune and cared nothing about Diane's interests.
Christine seemed a bit unnerved as she disagreed with Victor and insisted that Michael was looking after his client. Christine's defense of Michael appeared to deepen Victor's suspicions. Victor said he intended to go after Michael Baldwin by learning everything there was to know about him, especially his weaknesses. Victor said he would determine where to strike first and had a feeling Christine could enlighten him. Christine admitted that Michael had sexually harassed her.
Victor said Michael was the type to exhibit power over women. Christine said there was a possibility that Michael had changed. Victor doubted Christine's assumption and said Michael was a power-hungry slimeball who'd met his match. Victor vowed to protect his family and teach Michael a lesson he'd never forget. Victor added, "When you go up against Victor Newman, you'd better be willing to pay a price, and he will pay. Mark my word."
Victor entered the ranch house, and Nikki asked him why he'd left the office early. Victor said they needed to talk. Nikki said she was sorry for having lashed out at him earlier about the possibility that they weren't legally marriage. Victor said he didn't want Nikki to worry, so he'd contacted Wally. Nikki replied, "Our pilot?" Victor encouraged Nikki to go away for a few days because it would be best under the circumstances. Victor warned that Diane and her attorney were about to step up their attack and wage a bitter battle, which would involve the press. Victor added that no matter what happened, they were husband and wife. Nikki asked where she could go. Victor said he'd was making arrangements for Nikki to visit her sister, Casey.
Casey called, and Victor answered the phone. Casey said she'd love to have Nikki visit. After Victor hung up, he told Nikki that Casey was looking forward to seeing her. Victor said he didn't want Nikki to leave, but it would be best for her under the circumstances. Nikki pulled away and said she'd go pack her bags. Before Nikki left, she told Victor she would miss him terribly. Victor pulled Nikki close and said, "Now, you remember. You and I are husband and wife. No one and nothing is ever going to change that. Not ever." Nikki stopped before she walked out the door and told Victor she loved him. Victor told Nikki he loved her, too. After Nikki left, Victor took a sip of vodka and said aloud to himself, "Now. Whatever it takes, Diane Jenkins, we're going to end this permanently."
At Sharon and Nick's house, Sharon and Cassie returned from a pool party. Cassie proudly told Nick she'd made the biggest splash of all by doing the cannonball jump he'd taught her. After Cassie went upstairs, Sharon told Nick that Miguel had agreed to watch Noah while she'd gone to pick up Cassie. Nick said he'd let Grace go home early to celebrate her promotion, so he'd left early, too. Nick added, "One thing I know about that lady. She's a real go-getter." After Nick left the room, Sharon muttered, "She most certainly is."
Later Sharon questioned Nick about his working relationship with Grace. Cassie overheard and said she knew that Grace had worked really hard to earn a promotion. Nick agreed. After Cassie went to the main house to check on Noah, Nick told Sharon that Grace had really made an impression on him and was one to watch. After Nick turned away, Sharon mumbled, "I'll certainly be watching." Sharon asked Nick if Grace's promotion had been Victor's idea. Nick said it hadn't been entirely because he and Jack had had a hand in it, too.
Nick asked Sharon if she believed he was pushing her friend too hard. Nick reiterated that Grace was a talented, bright young woman. Nick assured Sharon he'd look after Grace because he had high hopes for her. Sharon replied, "At Newman Enterprises?" Nick said, "Yes, Newman Enterprises. Where else?" Nick embraced Sharon and said there was only one woman on his mind. Sharon moved in close and said, "Show me."
At the Chancellor estate, Katherine tried to pinpoint why Esther was acting strangely. Katherine heard a noise and asked Esther if she'd heard it, too. Esther replied, "I didn't hear anything." Katherine claimed Esther was going deaf because something was going on in the attic. Esther frowned. Up in the attic, Jill rifled through boxes and items strewn about the floor. Becoming frustrated, Jill cried, "Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. They've got to be somewhere in one of these boxes." Jill discovered a box of documents and pulled them out to examine each. Jill thought to herself, "You wanted me to have it all, didn't you, Phillip?" Jill continued to search for proof that Katherine had stolen everything she'd deserved.
Back downstairs, Katherine became more curious about the noises emanating from her attic. As she dissuaded Katherine from entering the attic to investigate, Esther claimed that boxes had likely fallen over. As Jill continued to dig through boxes of documents covered with dust and webs, a spider crawled about nearby. Jill cried out, praying that Phillip might help her find what she needed. Jill found a box marked "Chancellor personal" and opened the lid. Jill found a portfolio marked "For Jill Foster: personal and confidential." Jill cried, "Oh, Phillip, I knew you would leave me something."
When Jill heard Katherine's voice, she attempted to hide the documents. Katherine was shocked to see the mess Jill had made and asked what she'd been doing. Katherine berated Jill for disturbing Phillip's belongings. Jill claimed she'd only wanted a few mementos because Katherine hadn't allowed her to receive anything. Katherine took note of Jill covered in grime and asked her how long she'd been rummaging. Jill showed Katherine a tie clasp and asked if she could have it.
Katherine told Jill it was unhealthy for her to cling to the past and try to rekindle what was dead and buried. Jill said Phillip was dead and buried because Katherine had killed him. Kathrine recalled that she'd had Jill's farce of a marriage to Phillip annulled. Jill, yelling, insisted that Katherine had broken Phillip's bond because he'd loved her and not Katherine. Katherine drew back her hand and slapped Jill. Katherine told Jill that Phillip had never loved her and had only used her like a common whore. Jill grabbed Katherine by the shoulder and yelled, "You are pathetic!"
Katherine and Jill began wrestling. Katherine pushed Jill to the floor. Jill was horrified when she saw a rat and scrambled to her feet. The women began fighting tooth and nail. Jill told Katherine she hated her and would kill her. After a prolonged scuffle, Jill hovered over Katherine and yelled, I'm going to kill you!" Jill clamped her hands around Katherine's neck. Katherine gasped for air and struggled to escape. Jill came to her senses and removed her hands. Kathrine rose to her feet and demanded that Jill pack her things and leave. Jill glared at Katherine and wiped away a rivulet of blood that ran from her nose.
Victoria was summoned to Victor's office; she brought the report that he had been asking for, but that wasn't why he'd asked her to stop by. He wanted to fill her in on a few things that had been happening. He told her that her mom had gone to visit Casey for a while. He then proceeded to tell her about Diane thinking she had a case that she was still Victor's wife. Victoria asked if Diane had a case, but Victor assured her that Diane and her opportunistic shyster lawyer were in for a fight that he didn't intend to lose. When Victoria offered to go talk to Diane, Victor told her absolutely no; he would handle things. However, once Victoria was outside the office, she murmured, "The hell I will stay out of it!"
As Connie entered the office with some papers, Victor told her to find Jack Abbott and have him come to see Victor at once.
Jack visited Diane for an update on the war. Diane told him that the battle lines were drawn, and Victor knew where she stood. She also told him that she'd gone to the ranch and told Nikki that she was still Victor's wife. Diane admitted that she was enjoying it; she just wished that Nikki had taken a swing at her so she could have "knocked that broad on her caboose." Jack looked Diane up and down and asked how many times she had worn that dress. He told her that she should never wear a dress more than once; she was a woman of substance.
Jack advised Diane to begin using Victor's credit cards to buy furs, diamonds, and other precious gems. She had to look out for her future. Diane told him that he was incorrigible, but she liked the idea. Getting a sad look on her face, she said that all the money and possessions in the world wouldn't get her what she really wanted -- things back the way they had been before. Jack reminded her that that "ain't gonna happen, so hit Victor where it hurts -- in the pocketbook." After all, Jack argued, Victor had walked her down the primrose path and shoved her off the cliff. "He did, didn't he?" Diane agreed.
Jill and Katherine stared at each other with hatred. Katherine was barely able to speak due to the pressure on her vocal cords during the strangulation, but she managed to tell Jill once again to pack her things and get out of Katherine's house immediately. Slowly, Katherine picked her way across the rubble in the attic, leaving Jill alone. Jill moved to the box she had covered up and pulled out the papers she had found earlier. Looking inside, she found several legal papers and a personal letter written to her by Phillip. Leaving the attic, Jill knew that she couldn't let Katherine see the papers.
Paul arrived at Christine's office just in time to hear her giving a stern lecture to someone on behalf of a client. After she saw him there, they began to get lovey-dovey. Paul bragged about getting his mother set up with Charlie, but he thought that they needed another nudge. He thought that they should take Mary out to dinner and let Charlie just happen by again.
Esther was pacing when Katherine returned downstairs. Katherine ordered her to go upstairs and pack every single thing of Jill's and get her out of the house that night. Just as Esther was leaving, the doorbell rang. Esther was afraid she had done something that Katherine would be mad about, but when she said that she had called the police, Katherine promised to give her a raise the following day.
Dirty and disheveled, Katherine opened the door to two shocked policemen. There was more than a disturbance there, she told them; there had been assault and battery. They went into the living room to take down the report. Jill walked down the stairs and heard Katherine talking to the police. Quietly, she slipped the folder of papers into a drawer. Katherine told the police that she wanted Jill out of her house that night, even if they had to physically throw her out. Jill said that that wouldn't be necessary; she could leave under her own steam.
Seeing the blood dripping from Jill's nose, one of the policemen asked if she needed medical attention. The two women began screaming at each other again and flew toward each other. With difficulty, the police separated the two women. Katherine told the policemen that she wanted to file charges against Jill. Jill grew angry and threatened to file countercharges. The police informed them that if they filed charges, then there would have to be a full investigation, and a judge would have to decide the outcome. Jill looked at Katherine and said that it was her call. Katherine backed off. The police left, but first, they told the ladies that if they returned, they would take both women downtown for booking.
While Katherine was showing the police out, Esther walked down with Jill's bags. She told Jill that if she never saw Jill again, it would be just peachy keen for her. Jill promised that Esther would live to regret that day her whole miserable life. As Esther just stood there smiling, Jill yelled, "Boo!" in her face. Esther jumped back and then scurried out of the room. Jill slipped out into the hallway and retrieved the folder that she'd hidden in the drawer. She took it back into the room and quickly stuffed it into her bag.
Katherine entered the room, and the two women stared at each other. Katherine reminded Jill that she was never, ever to cross the threshold of that house again. Jill picked up her bags and left the house.
Diane thought Jack had returned when the doorbell rang, but, much to her surprise, it was Victoria. When Victoria walked in, she had a huge chip on her shoulder and attacked Diane instantly, calling her delusional. Diane, quite surprisingly, was patient with Victoria and tried to explain her side. She realized that Victoria was angry because Diane was trying to destroy her family, but she really believed that she was still legally married to Victor. "You don't know the whole story," she told Victoria.
"You think that Victor did a romantic and wonderful heroic act," Diane began, and she continued, "I thought that, too, at first. Victor promised that the divorce would be a temporary thing. He promised over and over that he would be back soon, and we would take up where we left off. Then, one day, out of the blue, Victor walks in and says that it is all over. He wants to stay married to Nikki. That is when my whole world collapsed. Something in me died that day."
Victoria began to see that there were two sides to the story, but she was adamant that Victor wouldn't change his mind and didn't intend to lose. "You are a very bright woman, Diane. Didn't it ever occur to you that this would happen?" Diane said that if she had considered the possibly, she would never have agreed to the divorce.
"I never meant to fall in love with Victor," Diane told Victoria. She said, "I was engaged to Jack. We were planning a wedding. Then your father came along and swept me off my feet. Over and over, Victor swore to me that we would be together forever. This was a marriage that would last a lifetime."
Diane reminded Victoria of the night of Victor's birthday party when Nikki had shown up and said those hurtful things to her -- when she had rejoiced in the fact that Diane would never have Victor's child. That night, Victor had vowed that Nikki was out of their life forever. They'd flown off on their honeymoon. The following days were the happiest she and Victor had ever had. He had declared his love for her over and over. "Then the horrible tragedy happened with your mother, and we flew home straightaway. Within a matter of weeks, Victor informed me that he was now in love with Nikki. A part of me died that night. So, let Victor come after me with everything he has. I have nothing more to lose. Your father has already done his worst to me."
With some understanding on her face, Victoria turned to walk out. Diane stopped her. "If someone you loved had done the same thing to you, would you just be able to walk away? Please, don't judge me too harshly." Without a word, Victoria walked out of the apartment.
Katherine told Esther that she felt so free and happy to have that monster out of her house that if she were still a drinking woman, she would make herself a huge martini. Instead, Esther offered to fix them both a glass of iced tea to celebrate having their house back. Katherine reminded her that under no circumstances was Jill to ever, ever to set foot in the house again.
Christine and Paul arrived at Mary's house, sorry that they hadn't been able to reach Charlie. When Mary answered at the door, she stepped outside rather than inviting them inside. However, Paul pushed right past her and opened the door. He was shocked when Charlie greeted him. Charlie said that he had just dropped by to ask Mary out to the movies.
Paul and Christine thought that was a good idea and encouraged Mary to go. Finally, Mary said that since it was such a nice night out, they should walk to the movie. As they left, Mary hinted that from then on, Paul should call before stopping over. Charlie said that he planned to keep Mary busy. On their way out, Charlie promised Mary a milkshake after the movie.
Jill went to her office before looking for a place to live. She opened the folder and removed the papers. Taking the small white envelope with her name on it, she found a personal letter written to her in Phillip's hand. The letter began, "My darling, beautiful Jill." Evidently the letter had been written just before he'd flown out to the Dominican Republic to obtain his divorce from Katherine. Wanting her to be her own woman even after they were married, Phillip had signed over some stocks and the ownership of his gold coin collection. Those were signed over to her in her maiden name, Jill Foster. Also, he said that Katherine didn't want the house, so he had signed ownership over to Jill. It was hers, regardless of their marital status. He had signed the letter, "Now and forever, your Phillip." Jill was ecstatic. "Oh, Katherine, you have no idea what is in store for you -- no idea at all!"
Connie told Victor that Jack would be right in. Victor demanded to know where she had finally found him, and Connie told him that he had been at Victor's ex-wife's house.
Jack finally got to Victor's office, and when Victor complained about his lateness, he said that he was there then, so Victor should tell him why he'd been summoned. Victor demanded to know what Jack had been doing at Diane's; he had to know that he was consorting with the enemy. "Oh, is that what she is now?" Jack asked sarcastically. Victor wondered if Jack thought that Diane had been mistreated. "Mistreated?" Jack answered, then shared his thoughts, "Oh, I don't think I would use that word. Used, abused, crushed, devastated, and discarded would be better words to describe what you did to Diane."
Victor said that Diane and her lawyer were trying to fleece him, but Jack reminded him that lambs got fleeced, not wolves. Victor said that he was tired of Jack's flippancy. He had something to say, and Jack was going to listen. He told Jack to think about where his loyalty lay if he wanted to stay with the company. Jack asked if that was a threat, because Victor might run the company, but he didn't tell Jack how to choose his friends -- it was a business relationship only.
Victor said it was a relationship that might not work much longer. He'd built the company without Jack and could run it without him. He said that he could walk out into the street and find any number of men who could do Jack's job. When Jack told him that he might have a chance to do just that, Victor told him to get out before anything more unpleasant happened. After Jack left the office, Victor said, "You are trying my patience, Jack Abbott, and I have just about had it with you."
Outside by the elevator, Jack was fuming mad. He said, "You don't want to push me too far, Newman, or you will regret it." As he entered the elevator, he said, "On second thought, maybe you've already pushed me too far." Jack's jaw was clenched in anger as the doors of the elevator closed.
Christine was on the phone, telling someone that it was a flattering offer, but the timing was not right. She agreed that the professor could call her, but she wasn't promising anything. She hung up and began work. Michael walked in for his weekly "checkup." He had a question: he wanted to know if Mr. Newman had been back digging for information on him. Christine reluctantly admitted that he had been back, but she hadn't told him anything -- more or less.
When Michael wanted to know about the "more or less" part, Christine told him that if he didn't quit pestering her about it, she would bar him from the office. Just then, Christine received the call from the professor. Once again, she thanked him for the flattering offer but told him that the timing was off. Afterward, Michael asked about the call. She explained that it seemed that someone was going to Romania to set up a prototype of the type of Legal Aid that she had set up in Genoa City, and they wanted her to be in on the project. Michael thought it was a great idea and encouraged her to take the post. "You take it, Michael," Christine offered.
Michael told Christine that he was in the profession for the power and prestige; he freely admitted that. But she was different; she was in it because it was something that she loved. He encouraged her to just think of what she could accomplish there in a country that was coming out from behind the Iron Curtain. He said there could be arbitration, tenant-landlord disputes, child support, and more. She would be in on the beginning of something, and the beauty was that it was justice. Christine was thoughtful. As Michael left, he told her that when they called again, she should say yes.
Ryan was checking his day planner and daydreaming when Nina entered the room. She had a good report on Phillip; he was happily in his room, doing his book report. Ryan said Phillip was getting better. Nina said that as long as Ryan was there, Phillip was fine. Ryan said that he had a life of his own, and he wanted to get back to it. He thought that he had made a mistake moving in there; all he had accomplished was to be a temporary stopgap. Phillip was stronger, and even though Phillip would be taking a couple of steps backward, it was time for Ryan to move out.
"Then why did you move back in in the first place?" Nina asked. She was angry with Ryan, and he accused her of making it hard on him. He then asked if she was making him feel guilty because she wanted him to stay. Nina assured him that she could live without him; it was Phillip that she was concerned about. Ryan said he could not stay until Phillip graduated high school and went on to college. He left, telling her that he would talk to Phillip that afternoon.
Nina appeared to be worried when Phillip left his room, ready for breakfast. Nina admitted that she hadn't made a hot breakfast that morning but offered to make cereal for him. "Where is Dad?" Phillip asked. When Nina didn't answer right away, Phillip asked her again. Nina was forced to tell him that Ryan had gone back to his apartment; he was moving back in with Tricia. Phillip called Tricia a "jerk," but Nina said that they shouldn't be trashing Tricia. Actually, she admitted, Tricia was a nice person. She promised that Ryan would always love him, but Phillip said that he had a feeling that he would never see his dad again.
Jill was jumping for joy and just had to tell someone about her good news. She called Jack, who was completely depressed. She wanted him to head to her office so she could share some good news, but he was in no mood. She told him that he didn't want to miss it -- it was better than sex. She had stirred his curiosity. He said he was on his way over, but it had better be good.
Once Jack was in Jill's office, he was surprised at how radiant she looked. He commented on it. She told him that he should have seen her the night before. She began to slowly tell the story, savoring every moment. Jack told her that he had a report due in the "Lion's Den," so he needed her to get on with it. She read the pertinent parts of the letter to him, and he was wowed.
Jack asked a few questions as to the letter's authenticity then asked if Jill had called John Silva. Jill said that John was pretty busy, but just as soon as he had some free time, he would be there for her. "What do you think Katherine is going to do?" Jack asked. A satisfied Jill answered that "that old battle-axe" would rant and rave, and rave and rant, until she slowly sank beneath the waves. "Can you believe she threw me out and told me never to set foot in her house again? Well, I am going to enjoy having the last laugh while I am living in my house," Jill declared
The exterminator was leaving the mansion and told Katherine that the attic had been cleared. Going back into the house, Katherine told Esther that finally her house was free of unwanted guests. The policeman from the night before called to check on her; she told him that everything was fine. Later, she walked to the window, and as she gazed out at the grave, she told Esther that she was free with all her wonderful memories. When Esther said that she was still afraid of Jill, Katherine said that Jill might be a witch, but even she couldn't fly through walls. There was nothing to worry about.
Christine returned home and was pleasantly surprised to find Paul home. She reminded him of the call she'd gotten some time before about the trip to Romania. He remembered, but he hadn't heard any more about it from her. She said that she had gotten another call earlier in the day, and she was reconsidering, thanks to Michael Baldwin. She told Paul what Michael had said to her, and Paul agreed. Paul finally realized that the main stumbling block for her was the fact that they'd just gotten back together.
Paul told Christine that they'd gone through a rough time, but through it all, they had never stopped loving each other. "Just consider this another business trip," he told her. She told him that he was an amazing man. "That is what I get paid for," he responded. "How?" Christine asked as she snuggled up to him. "With hugs and kisses and sweet nothings whispered in my ears," Paul said. "Well, today is payday," Christine murmured. They began kissing.
Tricia and Megan were packing up all of Tricia's clothes and other things. Tricia said that she couldn't wait any longer, never knowing when Ryan could spare an hour out of his life with Phillip. At least at home, she would have her dad and sister to lean on. Megan grabbed a box, and Tricia picked up her suitcase. They headed for the door. Just as Megan opened the door, Ryan was fitting his key into the lock. He realized that Tricia was leaving, but he wanted to talk to her first. Megan left the two alone.
Tricia told Ryan that it was her idea, not Megan's. She didn't intend for things to be over, but she just couldn't sit alone in that room, looking at four walls, any longer. Ryan understood. He told her that he was moving back into the apartment for good. He went to the desk and picked up a calendar. Taking it back, he showed her the date when his divorce would be final and he would be free to marry her -- if she still wanted him. "Yes!" she shouted, and they began to kiss.
Jack entered Victor's office and tossed the report on Victor's desk. As he looked around, he noticed the portrait on the wall and mentioned that only Victor would enjoy sitting at his desk and looking at himself. He remembered back to the day before when Victor had warned him that his time at the office could be limited. "Yes," Jack said, returning to the present. He said, "I believe you have finally pushed me just a little bit too far." Making sure that the door was firmly closed, he went to the phone and placed a call.
In Rome, Brad Carlton answered the phone. Jack hesitated and finally told Brad that it was Jack -- Jack Abbott. He explained that he had had Brad's number for a couple of weeks. Brad asked why, and said, "When I left Genoa City, you and half the town thought I had killed Victor Newman." At first, Jack denied that he had ever thought that but later admitted that if he had, he'd been wrong.
Jack got such an attitude from Brad that he thought he had made a big mistake in calling. Brad demanded to know why Jack had called. Jack said that maybe the reason he had called was a bit premature. He needed to think about it a little more, and maybe he would call later. Brad said he wouldn't hold his breath and hung up. "The timing is all wrong," Jack said, telling himself, "The timing has to be right, and how do I know I can trust Brad Carlton?"
John arrived at Jill's office, annoyed that she couldn't wait until after the holidays to get in touch with him. She said that it couldn't wait, and he would agree with her when he heard it. She began by telling him a story about an older man who fell in love with a young woman. Wanting her to enter the marriage with her own wealth, he made arrangements for her to have stocks, gold coins, and a house. Only the man died and left the girl to struggle all of her life, until 20 years later, she found the papers giving her all that wealth.
Jill ended her story by announcing that she was that woman. John was totally amazed. He read the letter and asked a few pertinent questions before telling her that she probably did have a claim. Guessing that Jill was on her way to see Katherine, he told her not to do that because it was a bad idea.
Sharon visited Doris and told her mother that she and Nick were closer than ever. The only "fly in the ointment" was Grace, who was still hoping that she could get her hands on Nick. Sharon had an idea that would show Grace just how strong the marriage was. She was going home to try to persuade her husband to have a party.
Nick called Grace because he wanted to go into the office to do a little work. He was babysitting at that moment, but as soon as Sharon got home, he would be going to the office. Grace let him know that she was thrilled to go to the office with him.
Just as Nick hung up the phone, Sharon walked in and told him her good idea about having a pool party and barbecue. With a little persuasion from Cassie, Nick said okay. Sharon got on the phone and called Grace. She said that Nick had changed his mind about work; they were having a pool party instead, and Grace and Tony were invited. Grace reluctantly agreed that they would be there.
Tony walked in and noticed that Grace wasn't looking too happy. She told him about the invitation but said that she'd been planning on spending the day with him alone. Tony said that they couldn't beat a pool party with lots of food and good friends. After she went to change, Tony said, "The lady has an agenda. This should be an interesting day."
Jack arrived at the penthouse and found Diane overwhelmed with work. She was behind in everything -- work from the office, drawings, and personal work. He told her that what she needed was a personal assistant. Things were changing for her, and she would not be able to do it all herself. Once she had help, she would wonder how she'd ever gotten along without one. If she wouldn't find someone, he would do it for her.
Victoria stopped by Nick's to tell him about Diane. Nick got very angry when he heard that Diane thought that she was still married to his dad. Just like his dad, he called Diane an opportunist. Victoria said that that had been her first reaction until she'd gone to talk to Diane herself. She was no longer so sure. She explained that Diane felt betrayed because Diane had thought their father would be returning to her.
Nick accused Victoria of not being on their dad's side. Victoria assured him that she was on their parents' side. Even though Nick's mood had changed, he invited Victoria to attend his pool party and reminded her to be sure to wear her bikini and show off her great body. She asked if she could invite a guest, and he told her to go ahead - "the more the merrier."
Neil was delighted to join Victoria at the pool party. He asked if he could take Malcolm's family along.
Nate was looking forward to his day with Malcolm in the park when Neil called. The pool party at the ranch sounded great to him, so Malcolm told Neil to pick them up; it was a go. Malcolm asked Olivia if she would feel comfortable going to the party with Neil and Victoria, believing that Neil was the father of the baby. It was fine with Olivia.
Victor was completing business with Ashley when Cole arrived to pick her up. Victor invited them to the ranch for a quiet steak dinner. He told them that Nikki was out of town, and there was no one else at home.
Veronica was having one of her bad days. Looking at herself in the mirror, she began having a flashback of the time when she had been in the mental hospital. She opened the drawer and found the newspaper clipping of the shooting. She couldn't understand how she could have done that thing. "I loved you so much, Joshua," she said, pondering, "How could I have pulled the trigger? Nikki took you away from me, but I never meant to hurt you. I just wanted to be with you again. Now you are dead." She cried. Suddenly, she got a mad look on her face, declaring, "You are dead, and Nikki lives happily ever after with Victor!"
Miguel called Veronica and invited her to the party. She told him that she would have to think about it because she wouldn't know anyone there.
Nick was busy preparing the grill when Miguel took out the burgers. As they worked, Miguel told Nick all about the woman he had met and fallen in love with. He had invited her to the party. He mentioned that he had asked the Newmans to find work for her at the ranch, but they had told him no. One day, he hoped to marry Veronica and make his life with her. Nick promised to talk to his folks and see what he could do for Miguel's pal.
Everyone was running around the pool and having a great time when Victor arrived. Cassie and Nate were having fun as the two youngest guests. Neil walked up to Victoria and warned her quietly that Cole and Ashley were there. Sharon, in her little bikini, was talking to Malcolm and Olivia, who were eager to get to some dancing. Sharon felt like a dance, also. She found her husband and began to dance. She noticed that Grace and Tony were there, and Grace was giving her and Nick the eye.
Victor told Ashley and Cole that he hadn't known there was a party going on. Victoria chatted with Ashley and told her to have fun. Victor walked up to Victoria and wondered when the party had been planned. She told him that it had been a spur-of-the-moment thing. He told her that if he had known, he wouldn't have invited Cole and Ashley. She told him that she had to get used to being around Cole and his fiancée because divorce was hard, as he knew. She kissed her father on the cheek.
Ashley walked up to Olivia and mentioned that Victoria seemed to be putting on a little weight. That made Olivia a little uncomfortable, and she wondered why Ashley was paying so much attention to Victoria. "It goes with the territory," Ashley said, explaining, "After all, he is my fiancé's ex-wife." Tony and Grace joined the dancers. From then on, it seemed to be a competition dance between Nick and Sharon, and Tony and Grace. Standing back, Victor looked on with a stern, knowing expression on his face.
