Guiding Light's edition of this year's Soap Opera Central awards provided more surprises than any other soap's balloting. In addition to the surprises, the final results in many fields were very, very close.

Going into this year's final ballot, newcomer Ricky Paull Goldin (Gus Aitoro) had racked up an impressive six nominations. It had been widely expected, according to chatter on our message board, that Goldin would win most - if not all - of the categories in which he'd been nominated. That would not be the case.
Goldin capitalized on just two of his nominations; however, both wins came in key categories. Goldin scored a fairly decisive win in the Outstanding Supporting Actor field. Goldin won the Outstanding Newcomer by an even wider margin.
Last year's big winner, Paul Anthony Stewart (Danny Santos) picked up four nominations this year. Stewart won his second consecutive Outstanding Lead Actor trophy, but the actor was winless in his other three nominations.
On the women's side, Beth Ehlers (Harley Cooper) earned her second consecutive Outstanding Lead Actress win. Last year, Ehlers eked out a win by just eight votes. This year she had a more comfortable six-percentage point margin of victory. Ehlers' on-screen persona, Harley Cooper, was again named Favorite Character.
The biggest surprise in this year's balloting was Jordi Vilasuso's (Tony Santos) two victories. Vilasuso has slipped under the radar of many experts predicting who might win this year's awards. Vilasuso was named Outstanding Younger Performer. Additionally, Vilasuso was named Most Attractive Actor. Vilasuso's win over Bradley Cole (Richard Winslow), Goldin and Stewart came with all four performers earning at least 20% of the total vote.
Laura Wright (Cassie Winslow) earned a second straight Most Attractive Actress win.
While some fans had been critical of GL's time traveling saga, the storyline did not earn enough votes to be named the Least Favorite Storyline. Oddly, the storyline had also been nominated in the Favorite Storyline category as well. The plot chosen as the favorite was Rick and Harley's one-night stand that resulted in Harley getting pregnant. On the losing end, GL's continued mob storyline picked up the booby prize for Least Favorite Storyline.
But the surprises didn't end there. Winless in each of her other nominations, Kim Zimmer (Reva Shayne) was voted as Outstanding Overall Performer. Each of the Lead and Supporting Actor and Actress nominees all received nominations on the Overall Performer field. Zimmer's win comes as the first-ever victory in which the Overall Performer winner did not win any other Dankies.
Voting in this year's Dankies was a record-breaker. Twice as many GL fans voted this year compared to last year.
